Cukui is an absolute San Jose establishment, rooting itself in chicano, south pacific-island, tattoo and graffiti cultures. Started initially as a small collaboration between artists Orly Locquiao and Sammy Rodriguez, Cukui has become a nucleus for new genres of art and streetwear.
"When we were asked to design something that represented San Jose, we wanted to go back to the roots of what San Jose was before it became Silicon Valley. We came across "Valley of the Heart's Delight" and thought it was such a beautiful way to describe the old San Jose, especially since farms and fruit trees is what I remember seeing a lot of while growing up here. We decided to take that phrase and put it hand written script and then we masked the photo into the script to add texture." --Michelle Locquiao of Cukui
